Bridgerton and the Problem With Color-Conscious Casting

May 24, 2021

As is so often the case, the theater got there first. Queen Charlotte, the latest Bridgerton installment, hangs on a similar scrap of historical speculation.

The prequel series, due next year, is set during the reign of George III but reimagines the court as racially diverse and modern in its attitudes toward interracial relationships. Its premise echoes Tom Stoppard's 2015 play Indian Ink, which recasts Queen Victoria's court with Indian characters and explores the consequences of doing so.

Both works raise fundamental questions about the nature of historical fiction, the role of diversity in storytelling, and the limits of artistic license.
